About Mr Smith

What can I help with?

Mr Innes Smith is a consultant paediatric orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialist expertise in paediatric & adolescent knee surgery.

What experience do I have?

Mr Smith graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2004 and completed higher surgical training in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery in the West of Scotland.  Thereafter, he undertook specialist fellowship training at two internationally-renowned centres: The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (Paediatric Orthopaedics), Sydney, Australia, and UniSports Orthopaedics (arthroscopic surgery and sports injuries), Auckland, New Zealand.  These experiences have enabled Mr Smith to acquire expertise in paediatric & adolescent sporting injuries, in particular the surgical management of knee ligament, cartilage and patellofemoral pathology in both skeletally mature and immature patients.

Mr Smith was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow, in 2019.  In addition to a general paediatric orthopaedic practice covering most childhood orthopaedic and musculoskeletal conditions, he has developed a subspecialist interest in paediatric and adolescent knee injuries.  Since his appointment, he has established a busy arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery service and runs a dedicated paediatric and adolescent knee clinic.  He now provides a tertiary referral service for ligament reconstruction, patella stabilisation, cartilage repair/preservation, meniscal surgery and acute knee trauma in children under the age of 16 years.

Mr Smith is passionate about medical education and contributes to the development of medical students, junior doctors and orthopaedic trainees through teaching and mentoring.  He has a keen interest in both scientific and clinical research.  Following completion of a PhD at the University of Edinburgh investigating the role of Staphylococcus aureus toxins (bacterial toxins) in the cartilage destruction associated with septic arthritis, he has maintained a research interest in musculoskeletal sepsis.  He has also published in the field of paediatric anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Away from work, Mr Smith enjoys spending time with his young family, cycling, golf and playing his bagpipes.
